Shannon Sunderland, intrigued by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which {loosely translated} means the beauty of things that are unpretentious and unconventional, began producing heirloom quality jewelry in 2003 by giving jewelry as gifts to other “new mama” girlfriends. Nearly every woman who received a piece with their newborns’ name on it would cry joyful tears, and she realized that this line of work is something really amazing. In our mass-produced world Hot Mama designs celebrate motherhood, family and the one-of-a-kind feeling of the handmade object.

Now partnered with neighbor, friend and fellow jeweler, Sahra Alsammarie, this collaboration is one-of-a-kind, so genuine and full of laughter … and love. And it shows in their work.

I was wearing a Hot Mama necklace when I gave birth to my little boy four years ago and I now wear my baby name pendant as an honor badge of motherhood hanging over my heart in tandem with my triple stack representing my other “baby” – my business. I rarely take them off as they empower my spirit to do the best I can everyday.

Shannon and Sahra are amazing metalsmiths, pouring their heart and soul into the bond between mamas and their bebes. This feeling of connectedness is what they love most about their work.

And then when you grasp that the goal of these two goddesses is to make women feel beautiful and celebrated down to their core, well, what more can we say. (But of course, you know we do have more to say! – just check out the next post…coming up!)
